Yahoo news item today headlines “Historic Passenger Lists of Ships to Go Online”. The article advises that the British National Archives is publishing on the Internet, passenger lists of all those who left the UK between 1890 and 1960. The item reports that the lists will be published on a commercial website, and be available from today.

I had a look at this website, registered for free then did a couple of searches with some success. However if you want to view most results then you have to pay! Not totally unreasonable as it’s a commercial website so be careful with your search parameters and what you choose to look at. The website also includes births, deaths, marriages, migration, census and military records from the UK. My searches would only let me query shipping lists from 1890-1899 so I think it may be a while before all the data are available. It’s certainly worth a look.
