Canoeing. Canoes were crafted out of corrugated iron and the holes filled up with chewing gum! The boy in the middle of the river is John Barns - he spent a good deal of time building this unsinkable craft (named 'Dreadnought'). It was painted a smart shade of green and carted home safely and with a good deal of effort after every use! (Info from John Barns). (Courtesy Gladys Mares).
